Maurizio Gily was born in Torino (Turin)

Education/Qualifications

1977 High Classical Studies School Diploma completed at the Liceo C.Cavour, Turin.

1983 University Degree in Agricultural Sciences, completed at the University of Turin.

1987 Master’s Degree in Oenology and professional taster degree completed at the University “Cattolica” of Piacenza.

Study and work trips to many viticutural areas in the world.

Previous work experience

From 1981 (as a student) to 1987: partner in a small agricultural firm (Cascina Alberta of Vignale) of the Monferrato region, near the town of Casale; directly concerning with wine-growing, oenology and farm-holiday tourism.

From 1987 to 1991: free-lance viticulturist and wine maker, with own office and laboratory for analysis in Vignale Monferrato.

From 1989 to 2001: vice-director and chief of the technical services of Vignaioli Piemontesi, a grape growes organization representing around 40 % of the Piedmontese production.

As technical director, Doctor Gily worked in particular on projects related to:

• Viticultural technical support aimed at reducing the environmental impact (European regulation CE 2078);

• Professional consultancy about vine management;

• Wine growing in nursery and planning of new implantations (project "vigneto Piemonte");

• Research and experimentation in the wine-growing and oenological sector (particularly with relation to programmes of characterizing and zoning and testing of new vines);

• Projects of business development, including the forming of new concerns;

• Quality control and quality systems ISO9000;

• Staff training;

• Scientific popularization through the house organ "Vignaioli Piemontesi"

 

 

 

 

 

 

Throughout present  occupational activity

Maurizio contributed with several writings to specialist periodicals. In the year 2000 he was enrolled as a freelance journalist at the Italian Journalists National Trust. He also contributed to specialist books and magazines in the service of other publishers (besides "Vignaioli Piemontesi"), among which "Slowine", “Informatore Agrario”, "Bibliotheca culinaria" and "La Stampa".

He has been editorial director of «Vignaioli Piemontesi», house organ of the association since its beginning in 1996: now he's editor of "Millevigne", house organ of UNAVINI, an Italian national grape growers association.

Maurizio left the employment at “Vignaioli Piemontesi” in January 2002 (but keeping the magazine’s direction) to start a new activity as a free-lance consultant.

 

Other interests

During the years Maurizio held a few public offices in civil service, such as:

• Member of the board of directors of the Experimental Institute for Viticulture in Conegliano Veneto.

• Between 1987 and 2001 he has been holding the voluntary post of “convivium leader” for Slow Food association in the region of Monferrato Casalese.

Since 2004 he has been working as an advisor in wine business policy for the Province of Alessandria, and director of the Public Wine Centre "Enoteca Regionale del Monferrato" in Vignale.
